Texting Emerges as Fundraising Force - Donations made by texting to the American Red Cross totaled more than $3 million in just two days after the Haiti earthquake in January 2010. Cell phone users sent donations via short message service (SMS), and the amounts were added to their bills. In comparison, the Red Cross raised only $190,000 via SMS donations in all of 2009. Industry observers expect mobile giving to increase as nonprofits look to tap a younger demographic that relies on cell phones and is eager to donate to efforts quickly, according to The Christian Science Monitor.
