Beginning November 15, 2017, the Ohio Department of Taxation began mailing Federal Adjusted Gross Income (FAGI) billing notices to taxpayers. You may receive a notice if there is a discrepancy between tax information reported to the IRS on your individual income tax return (Form 1040) and what was reported on your Ohio individual income tax return (Form IT-1040). The notice summarizes discrepancies for FAGI, exemptions and filing status between the “As Filed” and “As Corrected” amounts.
It is important to respond to this billing notice immediately. Failure to respond can result in an assessment in addition to penalties and interest. You have two options in responding:
Option 1: Pay the amount owed
If you agree with the billing notice, simply pay the amount owed within 30 days from the date on the notice. Submit payment to Ohio Department of Taxation, Billing, P.O. Box 182401, Columbus, OH 43218-2401.
Option 2: Dispute the amount owed
If you disagree with the amount owed, you can dispute the changes. You will need to contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to obtain your federal tax account transcript. If your transcript and the billing notice are different, submit the information to the address above.
If you amended your federal return but the changes are not reflected in the notice, you will need to file an amended Ohio income tax return.
